May 10, 2008 - Local cheerleading teams gathered today to help raise funds and create awareness for Breast Cancer, a disease that an estimated 5,300 women and 50 men in Canada will die from this year.

The 2nd Annual Cheer For A Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) event was held at the Duckworth Athletic Centre at the University of Winnipeg. Teams who attended participated in contests which included creating a pink themed banner, a pink teddy bear, and a pink themed cheer. Other contests of the day included a Mother-Daughter cheer contest, a jump contest and performances by two of the local 18+ teams.

Green Jackets had a strong showing, taking home prizes for the best banner, the Mother-Daughter Cheer, and Jenny’s hurdler, pike, around-the-world combo. Other awards were handed out to Erin from Oak Park for the Continuous Toe-Touch contest, Tec Voc High School for their Team Pink Themed Cheer and to Cassandra from the Winnipeg Wolves who tied with Jenny in the Jumps contest.

A big thank you goes out to all of the teams who participated, to the Green Jackets for the incredible pink themed goodies they donated to the bake sale, to the many sponsors, and to all of the volunteers for making this day a success.

This year’s event raised a total of $4,360.82. Congratulations to Edward Schreyer School for raising $1366.94 and being the top Team Fundraisers and to Laura from Oak Park High School, who was the Top Individual Fundraiser, bringing in $200.00.

“A huge kudos to all of you who put together this event,” said Monique Levesque-Pharoah, Urban Partnership Coordinator, CBCF. “The fact that not a penny was spent to hold this event is incredible and that we beat last year’s total is fantastic.”

All teams are encouraged to start thinking pink because plans for next year’s event are already under way, and organizers are hoping to make it even bigger and better.

“The CIBC Run for the Cure started out with 15 people participating. We definitely had more people than that here today,” said Monique. “Thank you from the thousands of families affected by breast cancer.”
